'Travel Buddies' to help London's disabled people use the capital's public transport system
|
A new scheme from Transport for London (TfL) called ‘Travel Buddies’
has launched and aims to encourage more disabled people to use London's
buses, trains and Tube system.
The idea is to offer London’s disabled people advice on the most wheelchair-friendly
trips. Those who want extra moral support can ask for a ‘buddy’ to
join them on their first journey.
The free scheme is aimed at those who have recently become disabled,
or who lack confidence on public transport. London’s transport authority
wants to give disabled people confidence in the transport system.
"People can use the scheme to help them complete local journeys to
the shops, library or college, using local accessible bus routes,"
said a TfL spokesman. “Some can use it together with Dial-a-Ride or
Taxicard to help them complete a longer distance journey that door-to-door
services find it hard to provide at low cost."
The Travel Buddies number is 0207 241 7457 and lines are open from
8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
