Innovative scheme aims to increase the use of British Sign Language in churches
|
A
programme called the ‘Sign Me In’ project is being pioneered in Bridport
in Dorset in an effort to promote the use of BSL in the UK’s Christian
places of worship.
"For the vast majority of deaf people, equal access to the message
of Jesus is dependent on the sign-language provision in their local
church,” said Project co-ordinator Sarah Haynes. “Following and achieving
the suggestions and standards outlined in the project should enable
both a more inclusive environment in the local church and a more effective
contribution from deaf people in the local church community.
"Many churches and Christian organisations throughout the UK are considering
how to make their services more accessible for deaf people, whether
to enable full participation for deaf members or in response to the
Disability Discrimination Act 1995."
One of the hopes of the project is that the church can be at the centre
of the changing attitudes to deafness. You can find more information
