INFORMATION ON RISER RECLINER CHAIRS

COMFORT AND SUPPORT

Recliners are available in many sizes, and are designed to provide long periods of comfort and support, and assistance in getting out again.

At the touch of a button you can ease yourself slowly into any reclined position. Then when you are ready, the Recliner can be returned to the upright position and will then slowly lift you up and tilt you forward until it becomes the easiest thing imaginable to get out again. You have the power to stop and start at any point you wish, control is smooth, safe and simple.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Riser recliner chairs can help to provide enormous health benefits to those who are suffering from a wide range of medical conditions, including arthritis, asthma, rheumatism, M.S., poor circulation problems and back pain and many other mobility restrictions. For people who spend a lot of time in an armchair, the additional seating positions that a riser and recline chair can provide, can reduce the risk of pressure sores, and other conditions.

EASILY OPERATED

Rise and recline chairs are electrically operated by pressing the relevant button on the handset. If the chair is in a seated position, it can be raised using the handset, and once it is as high as it goes, the user can then perch on the edge of the seat, and use the handset to lower the chair to the required position. When the user wants to stand up, pressing the relevant button will raise the chair and the user from a seated position to an almost standing position.

The handset that controls the electric lift chair can have as few as two buttons, on a single motor riser chair, to control the up and down action of the chair. The more luxurious models of rise and recline chair may have features such as a heat and massage system as well as dual motors, and so the handset will have more buttons. When choosing a rise and recline chair it is important to remember that the user will need to be able to see, identify and be able to use the different buttons on the handset so that they can use the chair properly. Modern riser recliner chairs have a built in battery back up system, so that in the event of a power cut the user is not stranded either in a seated or standing position.

TYPES OF RISE AND RECLINE CHAIRS

There are different types of rise and recline chairs, which offer different levels of support and comfort. As well as the level of comfort and support offered, the size of the user should also be taken into consideration. Riser recliner chairs are available in different sizes, as people are different sizes. A chair for a petite person will not offer the right levels of support and comfort for a very tall person, and vice versa. It should be remembered that unlike mobility scooters and powerchairs, optional extras aren’t really available for riser recliner chairs, so it is advisable to make sure that the model chosen fits the user’s requirements.

NATURE OF YOUR DISABILITY

The nature of the disability is likely to play a part in deciding which lift chair to choose. A very supportive back rest may be a requirement. The user will need to be able to use and understand the controls. Depending on the model of riser recliner chair, there may be only two buttons on the handset; one to raise the chair, and the other to lower it. If the chair has two individual motors and a heat and massage function, there may be several buttons for the user to learn.

As mentioned earlier, there are different styles and makes and models of mobility chair, ranging from manually operated reclining chairs through to very luxurious chairs that offer many features such as leather upholstery, additional pockets and heat and massage units. Mobility chairs are available in various colours of upholstery, and so you should be able to find a colour that fits in with your existing décor. Leather or leather–look upholstery can be kept clean easier than other upholstery, and might be more appropriate. Some models of rise and recline chairs come with matching settees or other furniture so that your front room furniture matches. .

The rise and recline chair will usually have one or two motors. If the footrest raises or lowers with the backrest, then there is one motor. If the backrest and footrest operate independently, there are two motors. Models with two motors are usually more expensive, but offer more positions so that you can find your ideal seating position. Depending on the user’s needs, the legs or back may need to be at a certain position, which a single motor chair might not provide.

SAFETY and GUARANTEES

Modern lift chairs are very reliable and most models even come with a battery back up feature so that user is not stuck in the event of a power cut. The battery will power the chair for two or three lifts only, but will ensure that the user is not left sitting in the incorrect position, and is not stranded. Safety is also very important, so particular attention needs to be paid so that children and others do not play with the rise and recline chair. As well as the performance aspect of the chair

The safety aspect also needs to taken into consideration. Modern rise and recline chairs have additional anti-trap features so that in the event of something getting caught in the mechanism, the chair will not function. In addition to this, some models require a key before the handset will work. This is to prevent unauthorised use and can be especially useful if young children are in the same room as the riser recliner chair.

There is usually a substantial guarantee with mobility chairs and some manufacturers offer a 5 year warranty.

The location of the riser recliner chair is important. The chair will need to be positioned near a power socket, and the back needs to well away from the wall so that when the backrest is fully reclined it doesn’t touch the wall. If the chair is too near the wall and the back is reclined, the back might not stop when it hits the wall, and so the motor will burn out, which obviously won’t be covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee. If the chair is to face a television or other focal point, it is advisable to do this whilst the chair is being set up. Once the chair is set up it is quite difficult to move, especially to a different room, as the back needs to be taken off which can be quite complicated.
