INFORMATION ON THE DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION ACT
From October 2004 Companies and Organisations that provide services to the public are required by the Disability Discrimination Act to ensure that their services are reasonably accessible to disabled people.
For companies that wish to adhere to the DDA, to have an "access audit" is a good starting point. For most businesses, making their premises accessible to disabled people will be a key aspect of compliance with the DDA. Installing appropriate equipment will also be of utmost importance to a company or organisation.
It is important to note that the DDA covers all forms of access to goods and services including provision of access for the partially sighted (such as assistance with form filling, signing of documents), wheelchair access, those with impaired hearing, physical disabilities such as arthritis and those with hearing difficulties, to name but a few.
Here are some examples of appropriate equipment:
- Induction loops for the hard of hearing (also known as hearing loops)
- Textphones for profoundly Deaf people (also known as minicoms)
- Ramps for the mobility impaired (for wheelchair access)
- Braille products and screen readers for the Blind
Why have an Access Audit?
- legal requirements such as the Disability Discrimination Act
- social responsibility
- best practice
- commercial reasons such as good public relations and an additional revenue stream (increased sales!)
- the audit focuses on what you are doing well and not just your faults
What will an access audit cover?
- access from the road or car park
- signage,lighting
- movement around the building
- toilet or bathing facilities
- marketing materials- printed or the website
- facilities for staff with disabilities
- staff training
- exiting the premises in the event of fire or other emergency
