Virtually blind woman crashes car trying to drive boyfriend home

A wheelchair-bound, virtually blind woman was banned from driving for a year and fined £200 by magistrates on May 27 after driving her boyfriend home because he was drunk and crashing into two-parked cars.

Sheree Smith, from Ely in Cambridgeshire, told police that “she was not doing too badly until her legs seized up and her eyes went blank". She told them that she was virtually blinds although she did have a provisional license a few years ago that didn’t take a test because she was scared of the road.

She explained her behaviour by saying: "My boyfriend was drunk. As I turned into my road, my eyes went blank and my leg seized up. I could not move the brake and the clutch. I could not see. I had my hands over my eyes."

Magistrates ruled that the ban would not affect her use of a disabled person's scooter.
